Professor Ascione has been an active NHS Consultant Cardiac Surgeon since August 2002 at the Bristol Heart Institute (BHI), University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust. He was trained in Naples - Italy and in Bristol - UK from 1994 to July 2022.
He has performed so far >4000 surgical procedures as Chief Operator with overall survival >99%. In addition, he performed >700 cardiac, lung and vascular surgical procedure as supervised trainee in Italy and the UK and assisted >1600 surgical procedures during his training period from 1994 to July 2022.
More than 90% of his Consultant surgical practice consists of new interventions he has contributed to develop and validate in >15 phase I&II randomized controlled trials he has led in the NHS and >20 case cohort studies. All this advanced clinical research was aimed at assessing the safety and efficacy of those novel surgical techniques and new approaches to reduce postoperative renal, cerebral, pulmonary and inflammatory complications an the risks associated with preoperative conditions including diabetes mellitus, obesity, elderly, renal and pulmonary disease.
Professor Ascione is a national/international expert in: Mitral Valve surgery (> 1000 cases completed at survival of 99.5%; MV repair success rate >92%); Coronary artery bypass surgery on the beating heart: (>1400 cases completed at >99% survival); Aortic Valve surgery (>600 cases with survival >99%), Multivalvular surgery, combined coronary and valvular surgery, Left Ventricular reshaping surgery for heart failure, and redo-surgery.
During his career he has trained/supported >40 junior clinical fellows/academic scientists and postgraduate students.
Professor Ascione is serving/has served in senior leadership managerial roles including: Best Practices in Nonclinical Evaluation of Polymer Valves Working Group led by FDA since Feb 2021; Clinical Governance Lead at the BHI Hospital since April 2019; Clinical Director of BHI Hospital NHS (2013-15); Founder and Director of Translational Biomedical Research Centre for drug and device development - University of Bristol since 2015; NIHR Theme Lead NHS Bristol Biomedical Research Centre in Cardiovascular disease (2008-17); Chair of the University of Bristol BHI Research Board (2010-13 - elected); European Society of Cardiology - Cardiovascular Surgery Working Group - 2010-18; European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery Academy - 2009-15; UK Society of Cardio-thoracic Surgery Academy since 2016; Italian MIUR-International Panel of Experts since 2017; New Emerging Technology Grants Committee HRUK since 2017; EPSRC-Peer Review College (Invited) since 2017;
He is the recipient of the National Clinical Excellence Silver Award since 2013 for his outstanding clinical performance in the NHS, the Garfield Weston Trust Senior Lectureship in Cardiac Surgery (2003-08), the Fellowship ad eundeum by the RCSE in 2004, the Master of Surgery by University of Bristol in 2002, the John Parker Gold Medal by the SCTS in 2001, and he was part of the Bristol team awarded the “Surgical Team of Year - 1st Prize” by UK Hospital Doctors in 2005.
Professor Ascione has secured > £58M in research grant and capital bid awards as PI or co-PI, > 250 publications including >200 Google Scholar-censed publications, 2 patents, 7 book chapters, 32 refereed Conference Contributions, 21 Reviews and Editorials. His research has inspired others with > 8800 citations; H-Index: 48 (Google Scholar). Significant international media interest with >40 reports including the BBC, The Times, The Washington Post.
