SCTS Adult Cardiac Surgery Sub-committee Co-chair

The SCTS is seeking expressions of interest from Consultant Cardiac Surgeons for the role of Co-chair of the Adult Cardiac Surgery Sub-committee. We are looking for a dynamic and committed surgeon who will enjoy the role and benefit from the opportunities it presents to work more closely with the Society. Becoming Sub-committee Co-chair is an excellent opportunity for continued professional development and making a difference in the development of Adult Cardiac Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland. It is essential that anyone applying to become Co-chair of the Sub-committee is a member of the SCTS.

The term of appointment is three years.

The purpose of the Adult Cardiac Surgery Sub-committee is to debate matters relating to the sub-specialty, including:

  • Providing a national role in the evolution of Adult Cardiac Surgery
  • Supporting the SCTS transformation programme in minimally invasive cardiac surgery and enhanced recovery
  • Supporting the development of clinically led best practice guidelines
  • Producing examples of best practice and quality improvement projects
  • Reviewing NICE recommendations
  • With the Audit Sub-committee, developing an SCTS-led audit strategy for Adult Cardiac Surgery, collaborating with the NICOR, NCIP, and other national organisations
  • Liaising with commissioning groups and the national Clinical Review Group, including contributing to the development and regular review of the national service specification
  • Reviewing job descriptions for consultant appointments
  • Developing the Adult Cardiac Surgery section of the SCTS website, including recently published manuscripts and guidelines to guide contemporary practice, in collaboration with the Communications Sub-committee.

Most of the business of the Sub-committee is performed through monthly conference calls, with one formal meeting in person at the SCTS Annual Meeting (usually in March).

The responsibilities of the Adult Cardiac Surgery Sub-committee Co-chair include:

  • Leading the sub-committee
  • Organising and chairing regular sub-committee meetings
  • Advising the SCTS Executive and Board on relevant issues
  • Representing the SCTS and liaising with other organisations at the request of the SCTS Executive

The post is not remunerated, and it will require the successful candidate to seek support from their Trust and to negotiate their job plan to enable the delivery of the role. Informal discussions may be held with Aman Coonar (Adult Surgery Sub-Committee Co-Chair), Doug West (Honorary Secretary), and Enoch Ackowuah (President Elect).

Interested members should submit a brief CV and a completed application form to nadia@scts.org by 5pm Monday 24th November 2025.
