Job Description:
This 12-month fellowship offers a high-volume, hands-on experience in complex adult cardiac surgery at a leading tertiary referral centre. Fellows are fully integrated into the clinical team and work within a dedicated multidisciplinary aortic team, gaining significant exposure to advanced aortic surgery (root, ascending, arch), acute dissection repair, and techniques such as FET and AMDS.
The fellowship includes experience in mitral repair, multivalvular surgery, rheumatic valve surgery, coronary revascularisation (including off-pump and all-arterial), arrhythmia surgery, endoscopic conduit harvest, and minimally invasive techniques including minimally invasive aortic work and VATS atrial clip placement.
Responsibilities include ward and outpatient care, intraoperative participation with progressive autonomy (including potential for independent cases), participation in the SMO on-call roster, and involvement in research, quality improvement, and teaching.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Completion of cardiothoracic surgical training
- Eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (see MCNZ self-assessment tool)
- Proficiency in English
- Ability to perform routine adult cardiac procedures (CABG or AVR) independently
