INSIGHT Lecture Series - Targeted at Prospective Medical Students

The opportunity to study medicine and allied health degrees should be open to all, but identifying opportunities to gain experience in this field is often limited to the more affluent or connected. 

The INSIGHT teaching series is designed to give school students an insight into the medical field and more specifically Cardiothoracic Surgery. 

INSIGHT includes a week-long series of evening lectures which ran for the second time in March 2024  This included a variety of speakers, from medical students, perfusion scientists, transplant recipients and surgeons. 

The INSIGHT lecture series has been well received by students and provides a broad overview of a career in healthcare. The timetable ran as follows:


INSIGHT Work Experience Scheme

Getting hospital-based work experience can be challenging. To address this, the INSIGHT programme also aims to offer a Widening Participation Student Work Experience element aimed at students who will be applying for medical school in the subsequent 12 months.

The 1-week placement in a cardiothoracic unit allows students to immerse themselves in the day-to-day running of a hospital and get a true insight into a future career in medicine by having the opportunity to observe and interact with doctors at all levels as well as current medical students. 

One of our main objectives of this scheme is to highlight that the multidisciplinary team working in cardiothoracic surgery is made up of a multitude of ethnicities, ages, socioeconomic backgrounds and genders as is represented in our SCTS INSINC committee. 

This is a well supported initiative and by having a medical student ‘on call’ with the students on all days of the placement, students have lots of opportunities to ask questions and can be at ease if they come across any problems or get lost!

In the 2023/24 academic year we successfully hosted work experience placements in the following locations-

- Bristol

- Leicester

- Cambridge

- Edinburgh
