Remembering Anthony
I am right now stunned and deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our friend and colleague, Mr Anthony Chambers, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon in Edinburgh.
Anthony was not only a very fine surgeon but also a warm and generous soul. He cared deeply for his patients and team, and his compassion and gentle humour brought comfort. Many of us will remember the way he listened, the way he encouraged, and the way he made time for people.
His skill and dedication have left a lasting mark. For those who had the privilege to know or work with him, his warmth and humanity will also be remembered.
Anthony’s father, David is a distinguished scientist and friend and is well known to many of us in SCTS.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with him, and with all of Anthony’s family, friends, and colleagues at this profoundly sad time.
On behalf of the SCTS community,

Anthony and I were in the same NTN group when I joined at ST3 (although he was part of the first ST1 run-through group). I saw him a lot over the years, therefore, at the SCTS boot-camp courses and social events. A very charismatic gentleman who was well respected by his colleagues. A great ambassador of the next generation of thoracic surgery, sadly taken away too soon. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

Ant was much more than just a thoracic surgeon or even a doctor. Despite having been his colleague for a long time, I only came to know and appreciate a more personal side of him in the past few years. He loved sports, art and travel. His family and friends were very important to him. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing and my sympathies go out to his loved ones. I pray that those closest to him will find comfort in the happy memories that they will always have of him. Rest in peace, my friend.

I only had the pleasure of knowing Anthony briefly during my fourth-year cardiothoracic placement, but to say he changed my view of medicine and life in general would be to sell short the immense impact he had on me. I shall remember him fondly. Sleep well, my mentor.

Anthony, not only a skilled surgeon, but a true doctor. Your patients loved you. You always took the time to see them, and they always appreciated your kindness. This was not lost on the nurses of CTS HDU, we were very proud to have worked with you.
Rest easy now, your good work will always be remembered, and your quiet care will be missed.

As a recent patient of Mr Chambers, I was both shocked and saddened to hear of his untimely passing. He was a talented surgeon for whose skill I will always be very grateful. He was also a thoughtful, friendly and reassuring presence during my two courses of treatment. I count myself extremely lucky to have been in his care. His family must be devastated, and are very much in my thoughts.

I worked with Mr Chambers as a junior doctor for four months and remember him as both a talented surgeon but most importantly an approachable and kind man. He cared immensely for his patients but also his colleagues. Sending thoughts to his family and friends at this time.

I was so very, very sorry to hear this sad news. This just doesn’t seem fair to have happened to someone so young and who has spent his life helping others. I believe my surgery was the last he did and in many ways feel guilty, as he has saved my life but lost his days after. I will always be in debt to him and his great medical and nursing team.

I got to know Anthony through the course of our speciality training from ST1 level. It was always an absolute pleasure to spend time in his company and I have many fond memories of training together. He was a fine surgeon and a gentleman, I feel fortunate to have known him. He has been taken too soon and will certainly be missed. My thoughts are very much with his family at this time. It is three weeks today since I received the deeply sad news of Anthony’s passing, and I am still struggling to come to terms with the loss. I came to know Anthony during his years of training as a thoracic surgeon in Edinburgh, and it was my privilege to work alongside him as his regular anaesthetist from the time he took up his consultant post until the day I retired.
Anthony was not only a highly skilled and dedicated surgeon, but also an exceptional teacher who gave generously of his knowledge to his juniors. He was a joy to work with—clear, considerate, and unfailingly committed to the wellbeing of his patients. His care and compassion were evident in everything he did, and it was an honour to have shared in his professional journey.
Anthony also had a great sense of humour, and his smile would often lighten the mood. His passing is a profound loss to thoracic surgery in Edinburgh and far beyond. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and by all who knew him personally. I will always remember him as the wonderful person he was. My heartfelt thoughts are with his family, and in particular with his parents, whose loss I cannot even begin to understand.

Really upset !Absolutely devastated and heartbroken to see this news on RiE site tonight. Article remembering young Anthony a kinder, more caring wonderful soul I have yet to meet : he was so kind and caring to me, and everyone at RIE so very sad he died suddenly . I can’t believe it, he looked so handsome ,
young and fit.
I feel it is wrong I am here because of his wonderful skill a pioneer in VATSurgeryand he is gone, it is unjust he had so much to give the World what can I give in comparison, It is all wrong,
He was such a handsome young genius😢 it is wrong I am here because of the lobectomy he performed with keyhole surgery in 2023 and I am old and he has gone. I worked in old RIE in the 60’s with Dr James Robson, Ann Lambie, Dr Pamela Ross McLean and Prof Woodruff : I was a lab technician in Wd 21 Renal Transplants and glomerular nephritis studies part of our research. So RIE and its history close to my heart. However I feel so sad Anthony has gone and I am still here, without him I would not be alive, his love and skill are imprinted on my soul.
RIP Deaf kind Genius !!

Anthony, it was a pleasure to be part of your team in thoracic surgery in Edinburgh, not only a talented surgeon, a lovely kind human with a wicked sense of humour and a cheeky boyish grin! You will be missed by so many, you were a great mentor and led by example to your junior colleagues showing them that a surgeon wasn’t only someone who was skilled with a scalpel but that speaking to patients and relatives with compassion was such an important part of the job. I hope your family and friends find comfort in their happy memories of a truly wonderful man, Rest In Peace Mr Chambers

We knew him worked with him,
The world keeps turning.
We walk dazed and shaken,
The world keeps turning.
We cry, we weep we ask "why",
The world keeps turning.
We look for answers, try to figure it out,
The world keeps turning.
It’s quieter, seems emptier, there’s a hole,
The world keeps turning.
There may never be answers, but hopefully peace,
The world keeps turning.

Anthony/Ant/Mr Chambers - you were someone who was one or life's real "characters", taken to soon, but not easily forgotten. Family orientated, sporty, musical, an artist, blessed with good looks, great surgeon, respected by juniors and patients alike, many who you would listen to compassionately in their difficult moments. You excelled in so many things, almost without effort! We will all miss the laughs, dry wit, cheekiness, quick rapport and boyish smile. I hope you are at peace and my thoughts are with your family and so many whose hearts and minds hurt at this time.
