National Wound Care Strategy Programme

Around 10 million surgical wounds are created each year. Of the 2.2 million people with a wound that has not healed within 4 weeks, 29% have an acute wound related to surgery. It has been estimated that approximately a fifth of surgical wounds fail to heal within 12 months, leading to considerable patient suffering and NHS cost.
The NWCSP Surgical Wound Complications Recommendations are intended for use in all clinical care settings and have been created to provide clear advice about the fundamentals of evidence-informed care for people with surgical wound complications. The resource is designed to support health and care practitioners, service managers and commissioners working in England in the treatment of complications resulting from surgical wounds, with a focus on surgical wound dehiscence. There is also a clinical pathway that is designed to ensure patients have access back to the surgical team as needed.
The National Wound Care Strategy Programme develops its recommendations and resources in partnership with patients, carers, health and care professionals who register their interest via our NWCSP Stakeholder Forum. By signing up, stakeholders receive consultation surveys, newsletters and other information about the programme’s work.
We will shortly be commencing a small working group to develop a surgical wound assessment tool. If you are interested in being involved in this piece of work, they can contact us at NatWoundStrat@mft.nhs.uk to express interest in receiving more information. We would be grateful if you could share this document with your networks.
