About the unit

The cardiothoracic unit at the James Cook University Hospital, part of the South Tees NHS Trust, is a specialised regional service, established in 1993, serving a population of 1.5 million stretching from Whitehaven in Cumbria to North Yorkshire, Teesside and Durham.

Adult Cardiac Surgery Thoracic Surgery

Rehabilitation and follow up

Follow up is generally 6 weeks to the appropriate surgeon with a discharge back to the GP as required. Cardiac rehabilitation is provided locally for catchment patients or if from an adjacent area the appropriate contact is made with the local hospital rehab team to ensure continuity of care - this extends into North Yorkshire, Durham and Cumbria.

Access

Cars are allowed to pull close to the South entrance doors for a drop off prior to being parked in the adjacent car park. There are ramps from the car parks and the main doors are electronically operated.

Visiting hours

Ward visiting is 15.00-17.00 and 18.00-20.00 (with a protected mealtime between 17.00 and 18.00). Intensive care visiting is 13.30-19.30 (but can be outside these hours at the discretion of the nurse in charge).
