SCTS Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Sub-committee Appointed Member

SCTS Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Sub-committee Appointed Member

Application

Job description

The Society is in the process of expanding the SCTS Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Sub-committee, with the purpose of providing a leadership role in assessing the opportunities to address the areas of potential inequality that exist in cardiothoracic surgery, to try and develop a diverse cardiothoracic workforce, and to provide an inclusive environment for all those wishing to develop a career caring for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery.

The responsibilities of the Sub-committee will include:

  • Increasing the opportunities to encourage those from all backgrounds to consider cardiothoracic surgery as a career.
  • Increasing the opportunities and supporting career progression for practitioners from a diverse background in cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Ensuring appropriate diversity of the positions of responsibility within the SCTS.
  • Ensuring SCTS policy and documentation reflects the Society's position on equality, diversity and inclusion, including that attributable to 'unconscious bias'.
  • Commissioning articles for the Bulletin and SCTS website from those who have faced issues related to equality and diversity, and on how to overcome the challenges.
  • Dealing with all queries sent to the Society from SCTS members and external bodies pertaining to equality, diversity and inclusion in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Working in collaboration with similar organisations nationally and internationally that promote equality, diversity & inclusion.

In view of this, the SCTS are seeking expressions of interest from cardiothoracic surgical practitioners (including consultants, nationally appointed trainees (NTNs), Trust appointed doctors, nurses and allied health professionals) to become an Appointed Member of the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Sub-committee, which will be an excellent opportunity for continued professional development and for the individual to make a difference nationally. It is essential that anyone applying to become an Appointed Member of the Sub-committee is a member of the SCTS.

The post has a 3-year tenure, with the potential for a 1-year extension.

Informal discussions may be held with Narain Moorjani (SCTS Honorary Secretary & Co-chair of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Sub-committee), Indu Deglurkar (Co-chair of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Sub-committee) and Simon Kendall (SCTS President).

Interested members should submit a brief CV and a completed application form to Isabelle Ferner (isabelle@scts.org). The closing date for applications is the 7th February 2022.
