ST2.1: Essential Skills in Cardiothoracic Surgery
Programme
Overview
The aim of the course is to provide a systematic overview of all the Essential Skills required for a trainee early in their cardiothoracic surgery career, including small-group teaching on cardiothoracic anatomy, imaging, preoperative assessment and post-operative management.
The course will also give the candidates the opportunity to perform operative cardiothoracic surgical procedures during the wet-lab sessions.
This is the only course that has been formally approved by the SCTS.
Course Content
• Cardiothoracic & conduit anatomy
• Cardiothoracic pathology
• Pre-operative assessment and risk stratification
• Cardiopulmonary bypass
• Cardiothoracic incisions and access
• Angiography
• Echocardiography & ECG
• Cardiothoracic radiology (CXR, CT, MRI, PET)
• Cardiac ITU management
• Re-exploration for bleeding & tamponade
• Oxygenation & ventilation
• Thoracic postoperative management
Plus HANDS-ON WET LAB
• Median sternotomy & conduit harvesting
• Thoracotomy & pulmonary resection
Course Registration
Current ST2s in Cardiothoracic surgery programme will be invited to attend this course.
Course now open to TADs of equivalent level of experience (at least 6 months on a specialist Cardiothoracic Registrar Rota). Please fill in the below form and, following this, register via the link at the top right of this page.
Registrants on the course will be asked to pay a refundable deposit of £200 to SCTS Education to confirm their place. The deposit will be returned on attending the course and upon completion of the feedback form.
