About the unit

Cardiothoracic surgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is housed in a self-contained, purpose built unit opened in 1997. Serving the 1.8 million people of South Yorkshire, we perform around 1000 cardiac procedures and 750 thoracic procedures per year.

Access

Cars are allowed to drop off patients and relatives right at the door of the Chesterman Wing. There is easy wheelchair access through wide automatic doors. There are several pay and display car parks on the Northern General Hospital site, many within easy walking distance of the Chesterman Unit.

Visiting hours

Visiting times for the wards in the Chesterman Wing are 3-5pm and 6-8pm.

Adult Cardiac Surgery

The Cardiothoracic Centre is based at the Northern General Hospital, providing local, regional and national services in Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, and Thoracic Surgery.

Our services are all contained within the purpose-built Chesterman Wing; which provides top quality, modern facilities for the management of heart and lung disease, enabling our multidisciplinary teams to work together to provide holistic, integrated treatment for patients.

We provide a comprehensive range of services for the management of all aspects of Adult Coronary Heart Disease, heart valve disorders, diseases of the heart muscle and heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, inherited heart disease, as well as the surgical treatment of lung disease including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chest wall conditions.

Our services benefit from being part of a large and thriving University Hospital, with links to, and support from, the Sheffield Vascular Institute, the Sheffield Kidney Institute, the Sheffield Thoracic Institute, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.
