About the unit

The Freeman Hospital’s Cardiothoracic Centre is one of the country’s major heart and lung surgical centres. It is the only cardiothoracic centre in the UK that provides adult and paediatric (congenital) heart and lung surgery, heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support all under one roof.

Our highly specialist services, for example, transplant surgery, are offered to anyone in the UK with more complex heart or lung related conditions. The Cardiothoracic Unit at Freeman Hospital consists of five adult and paediatric theatres (including a robotic theatre), two intensive care units (adult and paediatric) and four adult and paediatric wards.

There is also a dedicated transplant ward within the Institute of Transplantation.

Adult Cardiac Surgery

Our cardiac surgical service (heart surgery) provides routine and emergency cardiac and aorto-vascular surgery.

We are experienced in end-stage heart and lung failure including transplantation. Therefore, we offer surgery to people with most complex cases who have been declined for surgery by other centres.

We have seven consultant surgeons supported by cardiac anaesthetists, nursing staff, allied health professionals and clerical staff. In addition, our surgeons each have areas of cardiac surgical sub-speciality interest.

Our services

We perform a variety surgery as routine or as an emergency, including:

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Heart valve replacement and repair surgery
  • Surgery for aneurysms of the thoracic aorta
  • Surgery for abnormal heart rhythms
  • Removal of cardiac tumours
