Mr Vipin Mehta is consultant in cardiac surgery, aortic surgery and heart & lung transplantation, based at Wythenshawe Hospital at Manchester University NHS Foundation trust.
He completed his MBBS and postgraduate general surgery training in India. He trained in Cardio-thoracic surgery at Liverpool, Manchester, Papworth, Oxford and Norwich. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery training from North west national training program in 2017. He trained in aortic surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. He completed national fellowship in heart & lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at Manchester.
He was appointed as Consultant in June 2018. After one year at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital as Cardiac and Aortic surgeon, he joined at Manchester University NHS Foundation trust.
He is currently Lead for Manchester cardiothoracic NORS (National Organ Retrieval Service) team and responsible for leading the heart and lung retrieval, training the fellows in organ retrieval, managing the transplant team rota. He has led the introduction of SherpaPak™ for heart transportation and its first clinical use in UK in Dec 2019. He is actively involved in DCD (Donation after Circulatory Death) heart transplantation, making Manchester a pioneering centre in the world in this technique. He is also an active member of Joint Innovation Fund Implementation Board for implementing national DCD Heart retrievals, a unique and first such service in the world. He is member of UK Cardiothoracic Advisory Group(CTAG) - Audit group as the representative for Donor Management and Organ Retrieval.
He performs adult cardiac surgery such as Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and Aortic valve replacement (AVR). His specialty surgical interests are heart and lung transplantation, short and long term VAD (Ventricular assist device) implantation and aortic surgery including root replacement and aortic dissection repairs. He conducts Thoracic Aneurysm Surveillance Clinic(TASC) for aortic aneurysm patients.
He teaches regularly at SCTS University, CALS (Cardiac Advanced Life Support) Course, and departmental teaching sessions for junior doctors, nurses and Advanced Nurse Practioners(ANP). He also teaches and supervises Manchester university medical school Year 5 students for career placements and QEPEP projects. He is mentor, educational and clinical supervisor for ST1-ST8 (middle grade) trainee doctors, MTI scheme trainee doctors and clinical fellows.
