Tim Jones is a Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeon at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, where he has served since 2005. He is Honorary Associate Professor within the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Birmingham and Director of the regional Extracorporeal Life Support (ECMO) Programme.

Recognised as one of the United Kingdom's senior congenital cardiac surgeons, Tim Jones has developed an internationally respected clinical practice encompassing neonatal, infant, paediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery, together with complex aortic surgery. He has performed more than 3,600 cardiac operations, including more than 450 adult congenital cardiac operations. His work is characterised by the management of highly complex patients while consistently achieving excellent clinical outcomes. Throughout his career he has been committed to mentoring the next generation of congenital cardiac surgeons, supporting consultant development and promoting safe surgical practice.

Alongside his clinical practice, Tim Jones has established a distinguished record of leadership within the NHS, the Royal Colleges and professional organisations across the UK and Europe. He has held senior appointments with the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland, the Joint Committee on Surgical Training, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery and EuroELSO. His leadership has encompassed workforce planning, curriculum development, national recruitment, specialist assessment, governance, patient safety and professional standards. He currently leads national initiatives in surgical training and contributes to the strategic development of postgraduate surgical education.

Tim Jones has led major service transformation programmes throughout his career. These include establishing and developing one of the UK's leading paediatric ECMO programmes, developing specialised cardiac service, expanding regional capacity for congenital cardiac surgery and leading complex organisational change to improve access, quality and patient outcomes. His work has influenced national policy through contributions to Department of Health guidance, European clinical guidelines and standards for cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal life support.

Education and leadership development have been central themes throughout Tim Jones' career. He has designed and delivered national programmes in human factors, simulation and non-technical skills, chaired national training committees, examined for UK and European specialist examinations, supervised undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral research, and developed curricula now used throughout UK cardiothoracic surgical training. His commitment to mentorship has helped shape the careers of numerous surgeons and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.

Tim Jones is an active clinical academic with research interests in congenital heart disease, myocardial protection, extracorporeal life support and surgical education. He has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications, contributed 20 book chapters and secured research funding exceeding £1.7 million. His research has been cited more than 3,000 times and continues to influence contemporary congenital cardiac surgical practice.

Across his clinical, academic and leadership roles, Tim Jones has remained committed to improving outcomes for children and adults with congenital heart disease through excellence in surgery, education, research, innovation and collaborative leadership.
