Tim Batchelor graduated from Edinburgh University Medical School in 1995 and completed training in cardiothoracic surgery in Scotland and Yorkshire. In 2007 he was appointed as a consultant in thoracic surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary and oversaw a transformation in the way thoracic surgery was delivered. In particular, the unit became well known as a VATS training centre and as a pioneer of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS).

In 2022, Mr. Batchelor moved to St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London to augment the well-established and innovative team at the Barts Thorax Centre. He continues as lead for thoracic surgery for the ERAS Society and is principle author of the international thoracic ERAS guidelines. In addition, he is a member of the EACTS thoracic domain and is on the organising committee for the SCTS annual meeting. He also sits on the ERS/ESTS committee responsible for producing the guidelines for the assessment of fitness for the radical treatment of lung cancer.

Clinical interests include ERAS and patient outcomes, minimally-invasive segmentectomy, the role of surgery in the multi-modal treatment of lung cancer, and lung volume reduction for emphysema. Research, either as PI or co-applicant, has included VIOLET, PulMiCC, LIBERATE, GAP and RAMON.
