MIDCAB
The SCTS congratulates the New Cross team for successfully introducing Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass (MIDCAB) and hybrid revascularisation to improve the options for treating patients with coronary artery disease around Wolverhampton.
MIDCAB is a minimally invasive surgical approach through a 6- to 7-cm chest incision to perform coronary bypass surgery. This approach avoids cutting the breastbone and offers the advantages of early mobilisation, a reduced need for painkillers, and an earlier return to work and other routine activities.
Hybrid revascularisation involves combining MIDCAB for a bypass graft to the main coronary artery with stents to the other less accessible vessels.
MIDCAB is suitable for selected patients based on their pattern of coronary artery disease and clinical profile. MIDCAB is also performed in the re-operative setting for appropriate patients in whom coronary stenting is not possible. This technique avoids the hazards of re-operative sternotomy and hastens recovery.
MIDCAB has been performed across the UK for over two decades. MIDCAB is a safe procedure with good clinical outcomes, and there are established MIDCAB programmes in more than 10 NHS hospitals around the country.
