From Fontan to Founder: Olivia Burns Founder of Hypoplas is transforming her patient experience into patient-wear

Education Podcast

Have you ever worn a hospital gown?  Even if you haven’t you may well have felt the frustration trying to access a patient’s wound or lines whilst grappling with little ties around the back.  One person who has a lot of experience wearing patient gowns is Olivia Burns.  Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome Olivia was part of the early patient cohort to progress from Norwood through to Fontan under the care of Birmingham Children's Hospital.   After experiencing first-hand the inadequacies of the existing hospital gowns she has set about redesigning patient-wear with patients in mind revising everything from comfort to clinician access to carbon cycle impact.  Today Olivia runs her start-up Hypoplas creating patient-wear that works for the twenty-first century for patients and the planet.
