Cardiothoracic Trainees representing Castle Hill win European Competition

Miss Brianda Ripoll and Mr Nabil Hussein, both cardiothoracic surgery NTNs in Castle Hill Hospital, have successfully won the Cardiothoracic Surgery – Resident Showdown at the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS) held in October in Vienna. Brianda and Nabil competed against teams from across Europe and were tested on knowledge in cardiothoracic surgery. They came out victorious in a tense final against a team from University of Padova in Italy.  

 

This is not the first time the cardiothoracic trainees from Castle Hill have won this prestigious competition, with former trainees Mr Priyad Ariyaratnam (now Thoracic Consultant – Derriford Hospital) and Mr Joshil Lodhia (now Thoracic Consultant – St James’ Hospital, Leeds) being crowned European champions back in 2017. Both Teams in 2017 and 2023 were coached by Professor Mahmoud Loubani.

 

Brianda and Nabil will now go on the compete against the winning North American team at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in Texas, USA in January where the CT Surgery Masters World Champions will be crowned.  We wish them all the best representing Castle Hill Hospital!
