Mr. Geoff Tsang joins national patient charity for Aortic Dissection as Medical Advisor (Cardiac Surgery)

Aortic Dissection Awareness UK & Ireland has announced the appointment of Mr. Geoff Tsang, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Southampton General Hospital, to be the national patient charity’s Medical Advisor (Cardiac Surgery).

 

Mr. Tsang joins Dr. Emma Redfern, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Bristol Royal Infirmary, as the charity builds a team of professional Medical Advisors to support its work across all aspects of Aortic Dissection.

 

Announcing the news, Mr. Gareth Owens, Chair of Aortic Dissection Awareness UK & Ireland, said: “We have known Geoff for five years. Many of our patient members owe their lives to him and to the excellent Aortic surgery service that he leads at Southampton. He is a former Chair of the UK Aortic Society, who shares our values and our aims of raising awareness of Aortic Dissection and improving care for everyone with this disease. I am delighted that Geoff has joined us as a Medical Advisor. It’s always a pleasure to work with him and I look forward to the things that we will achieve together.”

 

Aortic Dissection patients in the charity’s 1,000-strong membership reacted positively when they heard the news of Mr. Tsang’s appointment:

 

Matt Allen said: “This gentleman saved my life. Forever thankful.”

 

Simon Burgess said: “Mr. Tsang and his team were just finishing a 10-hour operation when I was admitted. 16 hours later, they had finished saving my life. I've never had the opportunity to meet him or to thank him personally. What an absolute honour to have him as part of our charity.”

 

Jo Moody said: “Mr. Tsang saved my life on Boxing Day 2018. He is indeed an amazing man.”

 

Trevor Muston said: “Wonderful news. Mr Tsang is the loveliest, most humble person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting AND he saved my life, when I had a Type B Aortic Dissection back in August 2014. Forever in his debt.”

 

Mr. Tsang (photo, far right) hit the ground running in his new role, by supporting the charity’s patient team as they exhibited at the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery 2023 Annual Meeting in Birmingham. Explaining why he accepted the role, he said: “Aortic Dissection Awareness UK & Ireland has made a big positive difference to the care of patients with aortic dissection and their families, and I want to support them to continue their excellent work”.

 

The charity’s Medical Advisors serve for a term of 3 years, renewable by mutual agreement.
