Best Practice for Pectus Event

SCTS held the Best Practice for Pectus event at the Royal College of Surgeons, London on Thursday 2nd February 2023.

This event was well attended by experts, patients and parents alike to support this cause.

The Pectus Engagement Event at the Royal College of Surgeons


Mr Narain Moorjani, the SCTS President welcomed the attendees emphasised the need for the meeting and the agenda for the afternoon.


The event was chaired by Mr Aman Coonar, Chair of Thoracic Sub Committee, Ms Lynne Evans, parent and Pectus advocate, and Mr Narain Moorjani, President of SCTS. 


Mr Ian Hunt, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at St George's Hospital London, gave an overview of the condition and its variations and impact. 


Ms Lynne Evans shared the patients stories and its impact on physiological and and physiological challenges. She highlighted the journey of the Pectus and Me, book which is a collection of patient experiences.

Mr Tim Goodacre, Vice President of The Royal College of Surgeons of England, addressing the attendees and sharing his experience as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon and the support that the Surgical Royal Colleges offer in training and maintaining surgical standards. 


Miss Malgorzata Kornaszewska, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon Cardiff, shared the welsh experience where Pectus surgery is still funded. 


Mr Sean Marven, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon Sheffield, explained the various interventions and timing from childhood to adolescence. 


Prof Dawn Jaroszewski, Chief Thoracic Surgeon at the Mayo Clinic, shared the evidence of efficacy and benefits of various techniques virtually. 


Prof Babu Naidu, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon Birmingham, offered insight into the history, evolution and interventions available. 


Mr Carl Davis, Consultant Paediatric Surgeon Glasgow, presented the Scottish experience where Pectus treatment is funded. He emphasised the role and value of non surgical modalities at the right time to avoid surgery. 


Mr Joel Dunning, one of the leads of the SCTS Pectus Working Group to reinstate funding for Pectus in England showcases the Best Practice for Pectus. 


Mr Aman Coonar explaining the progress made with NHSE Specialist Commissioning regarding funding for Pectus in England. 


Ms Ashley Johnstone, Physiotherapist from Glasgow, offering an overview of the role and value of physiotherapy in managing Pectus. 


Ms Fiona Marley from NHSE, Specialist Commissioning, shared the proposed process map for funding Pectus surgey including the proposed National MDT. 



Mr Simon Kendall, past President of SCTS, and Ms Nicola Kane, Acting Head of Policy, Media & Public Affairs of The Royal College of Surgeons of England, who led and coordinated the event. 


Mr Shyam Kolvekar, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon with a large Pectus experience, with Mr Pala Rajesh, past Vice President of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Mr Rana Sayeed, Honorary Secretary of SCTS. 


We thank patients and parents who have shared their challenges in life with Pectus and the life changing improvement in their quality of life following the correction.
