This week is Mental Health Awareness week, 10th - 16th May 2021, and the timing of the SCTS Education annual Consultant Masterclass could not have been better. The SCTS hosted the 'Mental Training and Mindfulness for Surgeons Masterclass' jointly with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh on Saturday 8th May 2021. The focus was on Human Factors and various non-technical skills and how these impact on improved surgeon performance and ultimately patient safety. Although hosted by SCTS, the audience was a mix of all surgical specialties.
We were joined by Mr. Michael Lewis, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Brighton University Hospitals who, in his talk 'NOTSS: The Cardiothoracic Experience', spoke about how SCTS established the Non Technical Skills course for cardiothoracic trainees. This was followed by Dr Carol-Anne Moulton, Associate Professor & Staff Surgeon Department of Surgery at University of Toronto who spoke about 'Behind the Curtain: Surgical Judgement Beyond Cognition', covering the importance of attention threshold, relating to surgery. Our next speaker, Prof Peter Brennan, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at Portsmouth Hospitals focused on the importance of 'Human factors in patient safety and surgeon safety'.
After a short break we were joined by Dr Carter Lebares, Consultant Gastrointestinal Surgeon UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco speaking about 'Enhanced Stress Resilience Through Mindfulness'. Lastly but by no means least, Mr Ben Tipney, Founder & Managing Director of Medled joined us to focus on 'Increasing Psychological safety in a Team' focusing on behaviours and attitudes in respect to psychological safety and the effects this can have on performance as a team.
The talks were followed by a very interesting 'question and answer' session, which led to an involved discussion between the expert speakers.
Overall, the session was very well received with excellent live feedback.
We would like to say a huge thank you to all our speakers for accepting our invitation; to our Education Secretaries and course directors, Mr. Sri Rathinam and Ms. Carol Tan and to The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for hosting us.
If you missed the webinar, you can find the link to the recording below and we would encourage you to benefit from this, especially if you were not able to join us on the day.
