He graduated from Middlesex Hospital medical school at the University of London in 1989, and trained in surgery in London. He conducted research investigating ischaemic preconditioning and myocardial protection at the Hatter Institute at University College London, Mr Jenkins was awarded Master of Surgery from London University in 1997. He undertook his cardiothoracic surgical training at the Harefield, Hammersmith and St George’s hospitals, and was appointed as Consultant at Papworth Hospital in 2001. Mr Jenkins has experience in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, but he majority of his current workload is specialist, mainly related to the surgical treatment of pulmonary hypertension, intra-thoracic transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). In 2004, he became lead surgeon for the UK national pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) program, and more than half of his current clinical practice is devoted to this surgery (PEA surgery is not included in the audit data displayed here).
