About Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a modern and dynamic city, bustling with life and enterprise.

The city has some of the largest centres of excellence which attract the world’s sharpest and most creative minds. From the Edinburgh Science Triangle made up of the BioQuarter, one of Europe’s leading facilities of translational medical research , the Informatics Forum of the University of Edinburgh, the Roslin Institute and the Edinburgh University Veterinary School. These institutes are within thirty minutes travelling distance of each other and house more than 3,000 world class researchers and over 100 market-leading companies creating a ‘super-campus’ which is still growing.

Edinburgh has two adjacent UNESCO World Heritage sites with stunning architecture and wonderful galleries, museums, theatres and art venues and was designated the first UNESCO City of Literature.

The people are warm, helpful and friendly with a strong tradition of service and professionalism. It is the festival capital of Europe, with a dazzling array of events throughout the year.

The weather is temperate, with less annual rainfall than Rome, Frankfurt and New York, and Edinburgh enjoys clear, crisp, sunny days in spring and autumn.

The city has more restaurants per head of population than any other city in the UK, catering for all tastes.

Scotland’s award-winning city combined with the flexible space offered by Surgeons Quarter presents conference organisers with a wonderful opportunity to host highly professional and memorable events.

The Royal College of Surgeons is in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, a bustling, quirky area full of history. We have been part of this area of town since the 1600s and have been resident in our current location since 1832. We are considered one of the oldest surgical corporations in the world.

The first building you encounter on entering our Quarter is the impressive Playfair Building which dates back to the early 1800s. On either side of the Playfair Building are the contemporary Quincentenary and Prince Philip Buildings. The map on the left illustrates the close proximity of all three spaces which can be utilised separately or in conjunction with one another.

The most cutting-edge addition to the Quarter is our hotel, Ten Hill Place, which was extended and refurbished to a high-standard in 2018. Providing excellent accommodation as well as a stylish bar and restaurant, the hotel’s peaceful and relaxing environment provides the perfect retreat for rest and recuperation following a busy conference day.
