About the unit

The cardiac unit at Walsgrave Hospital, part of UHCW NHS Trust, is a specialist tertiary Cardiac Centre. It was established in 1970 and serves a population of 1.5 million across Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond. In July 2006 the unit transfered to the new University Hospital which is one of the biggest hospital complexes in the UK.

Rehabilitation and follow up

Follow up is generally 6 weeks to the appropriate surgeon with a discharge back to the GP or cardiologist. Cardiac rehabilitation is provided locally for Blackpool patients, or if from an adjacent area, appropriate contact is made with the local hospital's rehab team to ensure continuity of care – this extends into Lancaster, Cumbria, Preston, Chorley, Blackburn, & Burnley.

Access

The new build complies with all aspects of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Visiting hours

Ward visiting is 8.00-13.00 and 14.30-20.00 with a quiet time between 13.00 and 14.30. Open visiting for intensive care.

The cardiothoracic unit at the University Hospital of Wales is part of the Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust and was established in 1971 to provide specialised care for a population of 1.4 million in South Wales.

Rehabilitation and follow up

Follow up is with the appropriate consultant surgeon approximately 6 weeks after discharge from hospital. Thereafter patients are usually discharged back to their referring physician / cardiologist or General Practitioner. Cardiac rehabilitation is provided locally for catchment patients or if from an adjacent area the appropriate contact is made with the local hospital's rehabilitation team to ensure continuity of care.

Access

There is a drop-off zone next to the main hospital concourse entrance. Adjacent to the hospital there is a multi story car park, as well as designated parking for the disabled with wheelchair access to the hospital

Visiting hours

General Ward and High Dependancy Ward visiting hours are 15H00 – 20H00. There are no fixed hours for patients in the intensive care unit.

The Regional Cardiothoracic Unit is part of the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust. It provides specialist cardiac and thoracic surgical services, including cardiopulmonary transplantation to a regional population of 3.2 million people.In May 2008 a new facility opened with a 31 bedded cardiothoracic ITU and HDU, and new areas for Out Patients , all cardiology OP investigations including cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Car parks are situated 50 yds from the main unit. There are drop-off points, with wheel chair access, 25 yds from the unit entrance. There is direct entrance to the new dedicated Cardiac facility and Cardiopulmonary transplant unit via a drop-off point at the main doors.

Visiting times are 2pm – 4pm and 6pm – 8pm On ITU: 2pm – 4pm and 6pm – 8pm, and at any other time dependent on a patient’s condition and circumstances.

Spire St Anthony’s Hospital

Introduction

St Anthony’s Hospital has specialised in cardiac surgery since 1975. We have a holistic approach to cardiac surgery and are able to maintain a very high standard of care to our patients from the point of diagnosis through to discharge.

About the unit

The unit specialises in all aspects of adult cardiothoracic surgery and supports our expanding diagnostic and interventional cardiology programme.

We have an eight bed ITU and maintain round the clock cardiac surgical cover by having a cardiac surgical specialist registrar on-site as well as an on-call perfusionist and cardiac team, caring for all of our patients during their pre-and post-operative stay. The ITU has the back up of a wide variety of clinical specialists, such as consultant intensivists to provide additional support following surgery should it be required.

Our facilities include a cath lab, hybrid theatre and cardiac theatres with multi-screen ability to support endoscopic and minimal access surgery.

Follow up

We have our own cardiac support group that meets monthly. Patients are also referred to their local NHS rehabilitation centres and we hope to develop an in-house service in 2019.

Spire St Anthony’s Hospital is situated on the A24, London Road, North Cheam and is well served by road and public transport services. Close to the A3 and the M25, it is easily accessible and convenient for both Heathrow and Gatwick airports. Parking at the hospital and in the surrounding side streets is free.

Sutton Station and Cheam Station are on the Victoria and London Bridge line. Worcester Park Station is on the Waterloo to Epsom line. Taxis are available at the stations.

Department of Cardiac Surgery, Southampton General Hospital

The cardiac surgical team at Spire Southampton hospital has been performing coronary artery by pass grafting, mitral valve, aortic valve and triscuspid valve repair and replacement since 1984. We carry out approx. 450 Cardiac Surgical Operations every year. The average stay in the hospital is 6 days. The first 24 hours following surgery is spent in the critical care department and the remainder of your stay will be on the cardiac surgical ward where you will have a private room.

Rehabilitation and follow up

We have 4 phases of rehabilitation. Support and information is given to patients and families about all aspects of heart disease. Once the patient has gone home we will call to see how they are managing and visit where necessary. The patient then returns to hospital to attend an exercise and education programme. Support after this time will be community based.

Access

Bus 95 runs from Donegall Square East regularly. At the visitors' car park you pay before returning to your car. Disabled spaces and set down points are provided near the outpatients’ centre.

Visiting hours

Ward visiting is 15.00-17.00 and 19.30-21.00 with a quiet time between 13.00 and 14.00. No fixed hours for intensive care, but ideally before 21.00.
