DESCRIPTION:\n\nST3.2: Human Factors and Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons \n\nBackground:\n\nEffective team work improves patient safety and outcomes.  Human factors and non technical skills underpin the performance of the operating team during cardiothoracic surgery.  High fidelity simulation enables members of the operating team to understand the effects of human factors on team working.   By practice, observation and feedback it is possible to improve team working and patient outcome.\n\nAims:\n\nThe aims of this two day course are to:\n\nIdentify why errors occur in the operating room and how they can be reducedUnderstand what human factors are and the impact they have on patient outcomePractice and develop techniques for good communication and decision makingUnderstand the impact situational awareness has on decision makingDevelop leadership & followership skillsProvide a framework for assessment and feedback for non technical skillsLearning Objectives:\n\nBy the end of the course attendees will:\n\nUnderstand why errors occur amongst the operating team and how to minimise themRecognise role of human factors in improving team workingUnderstand what is required to be an effective team member and leaderBe familiar with a system for assessment and feedback of human factorsPlaces will be offered on a first come, first serve basis to National Trainee Numbered (NTN) trainees at ST3 level and ST4 Thoracic. Now open to TADs of equivalent level! (6 months on CTh registrar rota)\n\nThere is a maximum of 12 places available. If you are unable to secure a place on this course, please sign up to the wait list and you will be notified of any cancellations. \n\nPlease note, a course fee of £200 will be required to register. This covers the course venue access, refreshments and lunches on both days of the course, in addition to a course dinner on Day 1 of the course at 7:30pm. \n\nTrainee feedback:\n\n'Great interaction between faculty and the delegates.
