ST3.2: Human Factors - Non-Technical Skills for Surgeons (ST5B) - Bristol Simulation Centre

Background:

Effective team work improves patient safety and outcomes.  Human factors and non technical skills underpin the performance of the operating team during cardiothoracic surgery.  High fidelity simulation enables members of the operating team to understand the effects of human factors on team working.   By practice, observation and feedback it is possible to improve team working and patient outcome.

Aims:

The aims of this two day course are to:

  • Identify why errors occur in the operating room and how they can be reduced
  • Understand what human factors are and the impact they have on patient outcome
  • Practice and develop techniques for good communication and decision making
  • Understand the impact situational awareness has on decision making
  • Develop leadership & followership skills
  • Provide a framework for assessment and feedback for non technical skills

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course attendees will:

  • Understand why errors occur amongst the operating team and how to minimise them
  • Recognise role of human factors in improving team working
  • Understand what is required to be an effective team member and leader
  • Be familiar with a system for assessment and feedback of human factors
