Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon (since 1993) and Senior Lecturer in Clinical Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, University of Birmingham and Royal Centre for Defence Medicine UK. Interests in all aspects of Adult cardiac surgery.
Civillian consultant cardiac surgeon to the British Army. Associate Medical Director University Hospital Birmingham and Heart of England Foundation Trusts 2016.
Previously consultant and Senior Lecturer at the Royal London Hospital and University of London 1991 to 1993 . Trained in Newcastle London Boston USA Leicester Nottingham and Papworth Hospitals.
Clinical results in Adult Cardiac surgery – operated on over 6500 patients over 25 years as a consultant . 1200 patients treated at the Priory Hospital Birmingham – with a 0.3% mortality over the past 10 years (national mortality over 2%).
Previous Chair of the UK National Training SAC in Cardiothoracic Surgery and Chair Joint Surgical Colleges Committee for Intercollegiate examinations (JCIE) UK and Ireland. Current Chair International JSCFE (overseas) exam board.
Chair of EBCTS 2014 – 2017 – the EACTS European examination in Cardio Thoracic Surgery
SCTS President elect 2012 to 2014.Previous Executive member and trustee for 2 terms.
Previous Deputy Chair of the School of Surgery for the West Midlands Deanery UK
Previous member and Chair of the SAB in Cardiothoracic Surgery for RCS Edinburgh and on the examiners panel for the Tripartite Fellowship examination (Far East) since 2003.
Joint founder of the National Birmingham Review course in Cardiothoracic surgery since 1994 and the National Birmingham Professional Development Course since 2004.
Joint founder and convenor of the Asian Cardiothoracic Surgery Specialty Update Course (ACSSUC) since 2006.
Received Honorary Fellowship Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons 2011 ; Distinguished Surgeon Award Academy of Medicine Singapore 2013 and Honorary Membership of Malaysian Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery 2016. Member of European Association of Cardiothoracic surgery,Society of Thoracic Surgery USA and Asian Society of Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery.
Research and special interests in the specialty- adult cardiac surgery, perfusion, management of cavo-atrial tumours, cardiothoracic trauma civilian and military. The development and delivery of surgical education and assessment including selection and workforce planning – national and international.
An adviser to the NHS England Ombudsman and Scottish Public Services Ombudsman.
