Special Interests: Adult Cardiac Surgery
I was appointed to the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1991 as an adult and paediatric cardiac surgeon to develop the childrens’ heart surgery and transplant programme. In 2007 I handed over the children’s work and did adults only, getting involved in the adult heart and lung transplant service. The requirement to continue on the on-call rota has prompted me to take early retirement (June 2015).
As a result of my experience as a paediatric cardiac surgeon I was closely involved in the latest review (“Safe and Sustainable”) in the long running attempt to reconfigure the national service. Over the years I have been invoved in education as a member of the SAC (national training committee) and examinations (Chair of the Intercollegiate Exam Board). I was a member of the Council of the European Association for Cardiothroacic Surgery. I was President of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery 2008 – 2010.
I sit as Assistant Coroner for Durham and Darlington and am the Director for Professional Affairs (Northeast) for the Royal College of Surgeons of England 2012 – 2017
